What managed testing means here, and how the other tags around it work

A managed testing engagement means a vendor owns a testing function end to end: scoping the work, staffing it, running it and reporting the result as its own deliverable. Two of the nine applicability tags on this page name a different engagement model offered alongside managed testing. Seven of the 42 companies, DeviQA, TestFort, a1qa, 2i, ImpactQA, QualityAI and Ubertesters, carry the Embedded team model tag, so each of these seven also publishes a dedicated team option next to managed testing. Three of the 42, Applause, Ubertesters and Digivante, carry the Crowdtesting at scale tag, publishing a crowdtesting option built on an independent tester pool instead of a fixed team. Nine of the 42, Q-Pros, Kualitatem, Bugcrowd, Pointwest, RTTS, Secuna, TestingXperts, TestVagrant and VSEC, carry none of the nine applicability tags on this page; each of these nine still publishes managed testing as its engagement model, only without a match on any of the narrower criteria. DeviQA and QATestLab each carry five tags, more than any other company on this page.

What kind of evidence separates the nine tags

The nine tags do not all read the same kind of evidence, and the full set of tag criteria sits in the methodology. Two of them turn on delivery geography alone, two on a published count with a source, one on a published onboarding time, and the remaining four require a published case study alongside a service or engagement model the company already offers. That split is why group size here does not track how common a service is: Nearshore for the EU reaches 17 of the 42 companies, while Fast onboarding reaches one, the fewest of any tag on this page. Security focus is the only tag with two alternative routes into it, and of the six companies that carry it, ScienceSoft, DeviQA, Qualysec, QATestLab, NetSPI and Cobalt, not one holds the verified certificate the second route calls for. All six reach the tag through the penetration testing route instead.

What the 42 profiles show and don't show

Company headquarters split across twelve countries: 18 of the 42 are headquartered in the United States, five in India, four in the United Kingdom, four in Germany, three in Poland, two in the Philippines, and one each in Uruguay, Canada, Cyprus, Portugal, Bulgaria and Vietnam. A headquarters country records where a company is registered. Where a company's testers deliver work is a separate fact, recorded instead by the nearshore tags described above. A headquarters country describes where the profile record places a company. It does not describe the testing work that company delivers, and nothing on this page reads it as if it did.

What a shared tag does not equalize

A shared tag groups companies by one published claim; it does not rank companies within that group by the scale behind the claim. Team size shows the spread inside a single group plainly: within the Automation first group of 13 companies, QAlified reports 11 to 50 people while a1qa reports 1,000 or more, and both carry the tag on the strength of the same published condition. A published headcount records what a company states about its own staff. It does not predict what a specific project would cost or how long that project would take to staff.

How this ranking was put together

Membership is computed from the profile, not chosen: companies appear here when they offer a managed testing service as an engagement model, as their own profile states. Position in a ranking cannot be bought. Paid options are limited to the extended profile, labelled sponsor slots and lead forms, and none of them affect tags or order.

The table compares the fields that decide this axis: published rates, minimum project, onboarding, plus the number of verified reviews on external platforms. Rates, minimum project size and onboarding time carry the source they came from next to the value.

  • Nearshore for the EU: At least one delivery location in the EU or the EEA, or in Ukraine, Georgia, Serbia or Moldova.
  • Automation first: Test automation is offered as a service, and at least one published case study reports a coverage or regression time metric.
  • Performance engineering: Performance testing is offered as a service, and at least one published case study reports a throughput or latency metric.
  • Embedded team model: The dedicated team engagement model is offered, and at least one published case study.
  • Nearshore for the USA: At least one delivery location in Canada, Mexico, Central America or South America.
  • Security focus: Security testing is offered, together with either penetration testing or a verified ISO/IEC 27001 certificate, and at least one published case study.
  • Device lab coverage: A published device lab of 100 real devices or more, with a source.
  • Crowdtesting at scale: The crowdtesting engagement model is offered, and a published tester pool of 10,000 people or more, with a source.
  • Fast onboarding: A published onboarding time of 14 days or less, with a source.

The criteria for this axis are on the methodology page, together with field definitions and the rule for editorial order. Changes of order are recorded in the changelog.

Questions

What should a managed testing contract specify beyond the scope of work?
A managed testing engagement hands a vendor ownership of an outcome instead of a fixed headcount or a set of hours, and turning that ownership into something enforceable takes contract terms: how fast the vendor responds when a test fails, what coverage it commits to hold, and what happens to that commitment when a release date moves. None of the 42 profiles on this page carries a field for any of the three, so a buyer cannot compare candidates on this basis before a conversation starts, and the difference between paying for a result and paying for people has to be settled in the contract itself.
How does a buyer narrow a shortlist of managed testing vendors down to something workable?
By deciding on a second requirement before opening the list. The model name on its own barely narrows anything here: managed testing is the largest of the nine engagement models this catalog tracks, and the next-largest group reaches 24 profiles against its 42. A requirement stacked on top of the model does the work instead. A company that also runs performance testing with a published throughput or latency case reaches only 8 of the profiles here, and one with a documented device lab of 100 or more real devices reaches only 5. Picking which of those matters first turns a list of dozens into a handful.
When a company takes over testing entirely, does it inherit the existing test suite or start from zero?
Managed testing covers two different starting points under one name: a vendor can inherit an existing test suite and process, or build one from nothing, and those represent different amounts of work under the same engagement model. The catalog carries no field for which starting point a given engagement assumes. The one related signal it does carry is the Fast onboarding tag, which asks only for a published start time of 14 days or less, with a source; that definition does not say whether the clock starts before or after an existing suite is inherited, so the same 14 days can describe two different jobs. A buyer comparing timelines needs to establish which starting point a quoted figure assumes.
How do I know if a managed testing vendor has experience with companies at my stage?
A managed testing engagement puts an entire function in someone else's hands, and whether a vendor has run that function for a company at a similar stage is separate from whether the model is offered at all. Client stages is the field built to hold that answer, but it is left blank for 20 of the 42 companies on this page, so for roughly half of them the catalog gives no basis for a stage match either way. Where the field is filled in, it names stages a company reports about its client base as a whole, not which of those clients was served under this engagement model specifically, since a company can list more than one model at once.

How to choose a vendor on this axis

Every fact about a company comes from a listed source. A field without a source stays empty. A certificate counts as confirmed only when a registry, certificate or auditor report backs it; a certificate the company only claims about itself is published separately, under that label. Vendors can request a correction at hello@qa-rating.com. A correction is applied when it comes with a public source.
